Residency Training in Clinical Pathology.
The University of California-Davis has a residency position in Veterinary Clinical Pathology available August 1, 2012. The 3-year program is designed to fulfill training requirements and eligibility for board certification in clinical pathology by the American College of Veterinary Pathologists. Training emphasizes analytical and interpretive skills in diagnostic laboratory medicine (hematology, clinical chemistry, cytology, surgical pathology); basic principles of pathophysiology and disease; and quality control, instrumentation and laboratory data management. The resident will be based in the UC Davis Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital and provide direct service and consultation to clinicians, technicians, residents, and students under the supervision of 4 board-certified clinical pathologists. The resident will participate in rounds and seminars, contribute to publication of case material, and design and carry out an original clinical research project. Residents also will participate in teaching clinical pathology to veterinary students. Opportunities exist for rotations through IDEXX Veterinary Laboratories in West Sacramento, zoo and wildlife facilities, research animal resources, and the primate center. The Department of Veterinary Pathology, College of Veterinary Medicine, Iowa State University, is seeking qualified applicants for a full-time tenure-track position in clinical pathology. University of Minnesota - Resident in Veterinary Clinical Pathology
Required/Preferred Qualifications:
Qualifications for the Veterinary Clinical Pathology Residency include a DVM or VMD Degree from an accredited college of veterinary medicine or comparable foreign institution and successful completion of a one-year rotating internship or equivalent practice experience. Duties/Responsibilities:
The primary duties and responsibilities of the resident cover a broad spectrum of activities related to their clinical training. Residents are expected to participate in teaching the clinical pathology class and laboratory for sophomore students and the Laboratory Medicine rotation for senior veterinary students. Participation in departmental seminars and training sessions in gross, microscopic, and clinical pathology is expected.
Program/Unit Description:
The Veterinary Clinical Pathology Residency at the University of Minnesota is a 3-year program that conforms to the guidelines of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists (ACVP) and is designed to fulfill the residency training requirements of the ACVP. Its purpose is to provide the resident with a comprehensive, in-depth educational experience in all aspects of Veterinary Clinical Pathology. Preference will be given to candidates with clinical and research experience and/or experience related to clinical pathology. Anticipated start date is July 16, 2012. For fullest consideration, application must be received by December 1, 2011. The
position will remain open until filled.
Candidate selection is based on strength of academic record, level and quality of experience and commitment to a career in veterinary pathology. Annual salary is $28,500 for the 1st year, $29,500 for the 2nd year, and $30,500 for the 3rd year. FICA, state and federal income taxes are withheld. Benefits include: health insurance, 15 days of vacation per year, professional liability insurance, time off to attend one professional meeting per year, and parking in close proximity to the CVM. Laboratory coats and surgical scrubs are supplied.
A diverse faculty including 3 clinical pathologists with predominantly clinical to predominantly research appointments supports residency training. There is a high quality, high volume clinical caseload with an emphasis on small animal cytology/hematology stemming from internal medicine and oncology. Graduate research opportunities, if desired, include but are not limited to NIH funded research projects in musculoskeletal disease, stem cell biology, infectious disease, and cancer research. Additional clinical and applied research opportunities are also available with ongoing projects involving the diagnostic use of biomarkers and companion animal cytology, hematology, and clinical chemistry.
The University houses five professional schools and colleges in addition to the College of Veterinary Medicine, including a School of Medicine. The opportunity exists to attend their pathology rounds and conferences. The College of Veterinary Medicine has an excellent library containing an extensive collection of reference material.

Combined Residency/PhD in Clinical Pathology - University of Georgia
The Department of Pathology, College of Veterinary Medicine, The University of Georgia, has an opening for combined residency training in clinical pathology and completion of a PhD degree starting July 1, 2012. Upon successful completion, this 4 - 5 year program is designed to culminate in a PhD degree and eligibility for the certifying examination of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists (ACVP).
Graduate research opportunities include, but are not limited to, the study of viral pathogenesis; arthropod borne infectious diseases; diseases of avian, aquatic, exotic, and wild animals; ecology of infectious diseases; cancer; and wound healing. Opportunities for research are also available through the University's Interdisciplinary Toxicology Program (http://www.toxicology.uga.edu/). The incoming resident will join 4 clinical pathologists and 2 residents. The residency program involves intensive training in all aspects of veterinary clinical pathology including hematology, clinical chemistry, cytology, and surgical biopsy. Teaching of clinical pathology to veterinary medical students, participation in seminars and journal clubs, presentations at national meetings, and writing a manuscript for publication are also expected of the successful applicant. Applicants must possess a DVM or equivalent degree from an AVMA accredited (or similar) institution and provide evidence of academic strength and interest in clinical pathology and obtaining a PhD. One or more years of post-doctoral clinical experience (such as completion of an internship) is recommended, but not required. Funding, including an annual stipend and tuition support, is guaranteed for three years contingent upon satisfactory annual performance evaluations. Residency in Veterinary Clinical Pathology
The Department of Pathobiological Sciences at the Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine invites applications for a 3-year residency in veterinary clinical pathology. The successful candidate will join two ACVP board-certified clinical pathologists and one additional resident in providing diagnostic services to the LSU Veterinary Teaching Hospital and the Louisiana Animal Disease and Diagnostic Laboratory. In addition to exposure to a well-rounded cytology and hematology case load, our residents have ample opportunities to participate in intra- and interdepartmental rounds and seminars, are encouraged to attend and present at regional and national conferences, and gain experience in teaching veterinary students, interns, and residents. Pursuit of an M.S. or Ph.D. is encouraged, with both time and tuition funds allocated for graduate course work during the residency. Current areas of active research within the SVM include vector-borne diseases, aquatic pathobiology, Mycobacterium spp, cardiovascular physiology, simian retroviruses, prostate cancer, and more. State-of-the-art advanced diagnostic and research tools are conveniently located within the SVM allowing easy access to electron microscopy, flow cytometry and an array of other molecular investigative modalities. Veterinary Clinical Pathology Residency
The University of Florida, Department of Physiological Sciences has an opening for a 3-year residency that starts Jul 15, 2012. The residency will provide clinical pathology training to prepare for ACVP certification along with basic research and teaching experiences. Those who are qualified and interested may seek an optional graduate degree program. Residents provide supervised diagnostic service in the UF Veterinary Hospitals Clinical Pathology Laboratory and help teach a clinical pathology didactic clinic rotation for DVM students. RESIDENCY/GRADUATE STUDY IN VETERINARY CLINICAL PATHOLOGY
The Department of Pathobiology (http://vetmed.illinois.edu/path/) and Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (http://vetmed.illinois.edu/vdl/) at the College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, has an opening for a veterinarian interested in applied and/or graduate study in clinical pathology. The position will be available as early as August 2012. Successful candidates will have the option to choose an applied program of training in clinical pathology leading to eligibility for the certifying examination of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists or a biphasic program consisting of 1) applied training in clinical pathology leading to board eligibility, and 2) study in experimental pathology or a related field leading to a PhD or Masters degree. Estimated completion time for the combined program is five years, depending on prior qualifications. Estimated completion time for the applied program is three years. Stipends begin at $31,600, depending upon experience. Tuition and most University fees are waived and standard University employee health insurance benefits are included. The department is multi-disciplinary in nature and a wide variety of research opportunities are available. Clinical Pathology Residency
The Section of Clinical Pathology in the Department of Population Medicine and Diagnostic Sciences at Cornell University has a vacancy for a resident in Veterinary Clinical Pathology starting July 2, 2012. This residency program provides 3 years of specialty training in clinical pathology under the guidance of three board-certified faculty. The objectives of the program are to produce outstanding clinical pathologists who are well-prepared for a career in Veterinary Clinical Pathology, to encourage trainees to become academic clinical pathologists, and to prepare candidates for certification by the American College of Veterinary Pathologists. Instructor in Veterinary Clinical Pathology
The Department of Diagnostic Medicine/Pathobiology, College of Veterinary Medicine, Kansas State University invites applications for the position of Instructor in Clinical Pathology. Professor in Clinical Pathology at Virginia Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine
The Virginia Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine is seeking an ACVP-Board certified pathologist for a tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor in Clinical Pathology. The successful candidate will join an existing group of 2 clinical pathologists and 5 anatomic pathologists within the department of Biomedical Sciences and Pathobiology. The primary responsibility of this position is to establish and maintain a high-quality research program with secondary responsibilities for clinical pathology service to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital. We are seeking a candidate with interest in any one of the research focus areas of the college: Infectious Diseases, Inflammatory/Regulatory Disorders (e.g. Cancer), or Translational/Regenerative medicine. Opportunities to develop independent and collaborative research programs are both within the college and at four other life sciences-oriented Institutes.
The other main responsibility will be clinical pathology service rotating with two other ACVP-Board certified clinical pathologists (~ 12-15 weeks annually). Clinical service includes review of cytology, hematology and clinical chemistry cases originating from the Veterinary Teaching Hospital’s clientele and surrounding referral practices. Development of molecular diagnostics is especially encouraged. The clinical laboratory is well equipped with state of the art instrumentation (Advia, Beckman, Tcoag, Nova, Immulite, etc.) and is well staffed with highly trained personnel.
The VMRCVM Pathology Combined Residency/Ph.D. Program is dedicated to preparing graduates for careers in either veterinary clinical pathology or anatomic pathology and as research scientists. Currently there are 4 residents (1 clinical, 3 anatomic) within the program. The pathology section at Virginia Tech is strongly committed to the teaching and training of its residents and the successful applicant is expected to take an active role in this as part of service and teaching duties. While didactic teaching is not a primary responsibility, opportunities for instructional participation are available at the graduate and professional levels and can be tailored to the candidate’s interest.
